After a Manchester test was cancelled between India and England on Friday, former England skipper Kevin Pietersen wondered if the players would be available at IPL 2021 resumed in the United Arab Emirates on September 19.
Pietersen said via Twitter, “So the test is cancelled by England v India because of Covid!
Does it indicate that NO player from each side in the UK is accessible with 9 days to CSK v MI in Dubai if 10 days of quarantine are available currently in the UK?”
The “backing” of Rohit Sharma helped to pick R Ashwin for India in the T20 World Cup roster as the team looks like one of the favourites in the UAE competition.
For Ashwin to return to white cricket it took more than four years.
In his final game in 2017, Pakistan defeated India quite comfortably in the Champions Trophy Finals.
In favour of Yuzvendhra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, both he and Ravindra Jadeja have been dismissed.
They were considered to be ineffectual in the restricted format but Ashwin was now picked, such that Jadeja has shown himself to be an economical bowler and a gun fielder many times before.
Rohit Sharma was the driving factor behind the white ball plucking comeback of the offspinner.
Before the meeting, the committee and the selectors sought his views and he urged hard on Ashwin being chosen by the squad.
When asked about this pick, Captain Virat Kohli also expressed the same perspective.
Kohli said before that Ashwin would be fortunate if the performance of Washington Sundar decreased dramatically and that Sundar would now have been left behind due to a finger injury and his slot will be ready for takeovers.
Both Kohli and Sharma emphasised the fact that in the UAE, the pitches are expected to be a slow tournament and that Ashwin has been one of IPL’s top spinners for the previous two years, which would justify his inclusion.
R. Ashwin will be extremely glad about the selection since he will serve his nation again after 2017 in a big event. He will be instrumental in winning this year’s team.
